The
Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) reports that Malawi continues to
experience heavy rains (since January, 2015). The flooding, combined
with heavy storms, has damaged
crops, food items, household assets, livestock, road networks, houses,
boreholes and toilets, and has destroyed many homes. More than 70,000
people have been affected, and at least 48 people have died. The Malawi
Mission Network (a PCUSA partner) is organizing a day of prayer and
fasting, and is coordinating donations for relief through PDA.
Barbara
Nagy, the PCUSA Mission Doctor that GCPC helps support, said, "the food
situation in Malawi this coming hunger season is going to be
catastrophic. Without outside assistance, many
people
will die of starvation or suffer irreversible problems due to sever
malnutrition, particularly young children. Whereas I'm convinced of the
appropriateness of the PCUSA
directive to focus on underlying issues of poverty and food security,
in this situation we will need direct food aid. Therefore, please do
pray and fast, please join us in our efforts to mobilize resources, and
above all, thank you for all you do to love, support and walk with the
church in Malawi"
