Community Garden Update for End of March

It was a big day in the extended garden—The potato beds were plowed and set by Anthony Cole and his neighbor at Anthony’s farm (Jasperwood Farm). The Blue Team—Beth Kissling, Rick Philipsen, Jill Wallis, Anne and John Rogers, and John Brigham--walked the rows and dropped the potato sets, all 1800 pieces! In the fall with good weather and the stars being aligned, we should harvest 4-7,000 pounds of potatoes. Thank you, Anthony.

Meanwhile, the left behind—John Curry and Buzz Durham--planted Swiss Chard and mustard greens, and Harry Summerlin assembled the bamboo trestle system for the snow peas to be planted on Saturday.  As it stands on spring planting, all rows except for two that are reserved for our earlier planting of summer crops are filled with seeds and vegetable transplants. The burning question: Will the arctic osculation stay to its shifted location and we continue to have unseasonable, summer-like weather, or do we stick to the historic May 14—last frost date to begin our summer crop planting? If you have a friend with a crystal ball or a inside track at NOAA, we need an answer we can plant on!

Stay tuned as we develop a very specific strategy to battle the clover that is aggressively invading our garden for the sides of each of the rows—it is a very tough plant to hold in check.
