Malawi Mission Network | Day of Prayer and Fasting | Sept 20

The Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) reports that Malawi continues to experience heavy rains (since January, 2015). The flooding, combined with heavy storms, has damaged crops, food items, household assets, livestock, road networks, houses, boreholes and toilets, and has destroyed many homes. More than 70,000 people have been affected, and at least 48 people have died. The Malawi Mission Network (a PCUSA partner) is organizing a day of prayer and fasting, and is coordinating donations for relief through PDA.

Barbara Nagy, the PCUSA Mission Doctor that GCPC helps support, said, "the food situation in Malawi this coming hunger season is going to be catastrophic. Without outside assistance, many
people will die of starvation or suffer irreversible problems due to sever malnutrition, particularly young children. Whereas I'm convinced of the appropriateness of the P
CUSA directive to focus on underlying issues of poverty and food security, in this situation we will need direct food aid. Therefore, please do pray and fast, please join us in our efforts to mobilize resources, and above all, thank you for all you do to love, support and walk with the church in Malawi"

Contributions for Barbara Nagy's Mission Work in Malawi

After hearing Dr. Barbara Nagy speak last week about the amazing progress being made in maternal/child health care in Malawi, people have asked how to make contributions to her work.  It's easy: Write a check to GCPC with "Barbara Nagy mission" on the note line, place it in the offering plate, or send it to the church bookkeeper. Thank you!

June 22: Nickel-a-Meal Collection

On Sunday, June 22, our children be taking up the Nickel a Meal collection after worship.  This simple program provides us with a daily reminder of the blessing of food that we have and the opportunity to share a nickel at each meal so that others may also be blessed. The money is distributed through the Presbytery to places far and wide.  Recently, $16,764 to be sent to Nkhoma Hospital in Malawi for food for the Children’s Ward.

Profile: Mission in Malawi: Meet Dr. Barbara Nagy

The Nagy family
Nkhoma Hospital in Malawi

Dr. Barbara Nagy, of Morganton, NC, has been a mission specialist (internal medicine and pediatrics) of the Presbyterian Church USA (PCUSA) at Nkhoma Hospital in Malawi, Africa since 2004.  We at GCPC support her and the hospital along with ~40 other churches from the Presbytery of WNC (PWNC).  She writes fascinating newsletters about the mission at Nkhoma Hospital and life in general in the remote reaches of Malawi. Read this series of letters here.  Barbara’s family includes three adopted daughters: Melia (18) and Anna (16), both born in China, and Happiness (7),  born in Malawi.

Barbara and her family have just returned to The States and will be living at Mission Haven in Decatur GA for two years, while she gets a Master in Public Health at Rollins School of Public Health, Emory University.  This will equip her for even better ministry on her return to Malawi.  In the meantime, Melia begins Rhodes College, Anna will be a sophomore at Decatur High School, and Happy happily starts the second grade.
