Spring Planting at the Community Garden
Springtime in the garden: the planting season! Saturday was a perfect day in WNC—overcast morning, turning to sunshine followed by afternoon thunderstorms and overnight rain. Between the overcast morning and afternoon thunder, about 50 gardeners planted vegetable plants, seeds and seed potatoes were cut for planting at Anthony Cole’s Jasperwood Farm, and the herb beds were cleaned. Not that we are counting, but the three 50-pound bags of seed potatoes turned into 1800 pieces of potatoes that will be planted next week. Depending on a myriad of factors that can affect the growing season, each of those 1800 pieces of potatoes will produce 3 to 5 pounds of potatoes—you do the math—that is a lot of potatoes to be harvested one at the time by hand! After this week’s Wednesday and Saturday Garden Teams complete their work, we will recap all of the vegetables that have been planted and we will have added labels to both the transplanted vegetables and those that were seeded in the garden.
