Guatemala Scholarship 2013 Report

Report of the Scholarship Committee
Timothy Project, 2013
Jerusalem Presbyterian Church, Coatepeque

Timothy Project Summary 2013
Below is the report on scholarships awarded to students in the Timothy Project, a program of the Jerusalem Presbyterian Church, Coatepeque, Quetzaltenango, Guatemala.  The report includes the process by which each grantee receives funds from the Scholarship Committee, the amount received, forms signed by the grantee and parent/guardian, and photographs of the students.
Funds were delivered via the Southwest Presbytery in the amount of Q 42,298.78 (quetzals), which benefited 38 of the 42 students who received scholarships in 2012.  Three students dropped out of the program, so the total number of grantees was 35.  The aid was given in three stages, each requiring bills to be submitted before money was released.  The first installment was in January.  Since this is the beginning of the school year, the largest amount (Q 500) was awarded.  The second installment (Q 300) was in May after bills showing school-related expenses were submitted.  This is when grades for the first and second quarters were examined.  The third and final installment (Q 200) was in September when third-quarter grades were available.  Of the 35 scholarship students, two dropped out before claiming the second and third installments.  Another two did not claim the final installment.
In November an extra meeting was held to see grades from the fourth quarter and final grade-point averages for the year and to see who had passed and failed.  In Guatemala a grade of 60 or above is required to pass a class; 59 and below is a failing grade.  Grades for the four quarters are averaged to determine the final grade.  In November, students with the highest grade point averages were awarded cash prizes.
We have grantees in first, second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth grades of elementary school (Primaria); first, second, and third years of junior high (Básico); and various career areas in high school (Carrera) such as Accounting with Specialization in Computing, Business Administration, Auto Mechanics, Office/Secretarial, Teaching.
Problems that scholarship students face include:
-- Anemia caused by poor diets; abdominal parasites; lack of vitamins to boost metabolism.  Their living conditions keep them from doing well in their studies.
-- There is no educational reinforcement and not everyone can pay for a tutor in order to strengthen the weak areas.
-- One of the biggest problems occurs when the student leaves elementary school’s sixth grade and advances to junior high.  In elementary school, a student has nine classes, but in junior high the student has sixteen classes at a time.  Adjusting to the greater demands in junior high is a great struggle.
At the beginning of the school year, each grantee and parent signs an agreement (attached). Failure to comply with the requirements of the scholarship means the student cannot continue receiving scholarship funds.  Of the 38 grantees for 2013, 13 are female and 25 are male.  Eighty percent of the grantees are from Jerusalem Presbyterian Church; twenty percent are from other denominations or churches.
Scholarship grantees and some parents provided a day of service to the church.  They cleaned the present church building and the lot where the new church will be built.
To summarize, a total of Q 33,200.00  was awarded to scholarship students and Q 1,007.80  was used for administrative expenses for a total of Q 34,207.80 spent in 2013.  The unspent balance of Q 8,090.99 was added to the Q 42,545.88 donated by Grace Covenant for 2014 making a total of Q 50,636.87 available for scholarships in 2014.  This permits us to support twenty additional students in 2014.
